Governor Punjab awards Essa Khan for honesty

LAHORE: Governor Punjab Salmaan Taseer gave an award and cash prize to a hotel employee, Essa Khan, for returning fifty thousand dollars to a guest at his hotel in Gilgit.

The Governor held a ceremony at the Governor House on Wednesday, where Chief Minister Gilgit Baltistan Syed Mehdi Shah was also invited.

Taseer appreciated the hotel employee and said his honesty had earned fame for Pakistan throughout the world.

Chief Minister Gilgit Baltistan said he was proud to live on the land of brave and honest people.

Essa Khan, 51, discovered the money in $100 notes left in the room of a Japanese worker at the Serena Hotel in Gilgit, reported the BBC.

Khan, who earns about Rs 21,000 a month, says he never considered keeping the money. He has been invited to receive an award from a state governor for his honesty. “My duty with the hotel and my family upbringing teaches me nothing else,” he said. “Times are hard for everyone, but that doesn’t mean we should start stealing and taking things which do not belong to us.”   Express Tribune

Bulgarian mountaineer dies on K2

A Bulgarian mountaineer has died on K2, the second highest mountain on Earth, universally known among mountain climbers as the Savage Mountain – by far, the most difficult mountain to climb on the planet. The news of the accident was reported at everestnews.com and then confirmed by climbingguide.bg.

Petar Unzhiev was climbing to Camp Two at 6700 metres with a Romanian-American climber, identified as George Dijmarescu, where they spent the night in a tent. The next day the Romanian had descended to Base Camp as part of an acclimatisation routine, but the Bulgarian had remained high in Camp Two, for reasons which for the moment remain unknown.

The death was apparently confirmed by a Pakistani official, Essar Karim from Adventure Tours Pakistan.

At 8611 metres, K2 is part of the Karakoram Range, and is on the border between the Taxkorgan Tajik autonomous county of Xinjiang, China, and Gilgit, in Gilgit-Baltistan of Pakistan.

K2 is known as the Savage Mountain due to the difficulty of ascent and it holds the second highest mortality rate among the 8000m+ peaks for those who climb it. For every four people who have reached the summit, one has died trying. However, unlike Annapurna, the mountain with the highest fatality rate, K2 has never been climbed in winter.

According to Unzhiev’s website, he sought to become the first Bulgarian climber to scale K2, followed by Manaslu peak later this year, before targeting six more eight-thousanders in 2011. By mid-2013, Unzhiev had hoped to make attempts to climb most of the eight-thousander peaks in the Himalayan and Karakoram ranges. Source

Victims complain of lack of facilities, harsh attitude

By Shabbir Mir

The problems of those displaced by the Attabad lake disaster are further being compounded by a lack of life saving facilities and rude officials, residents complained.

“Most of the boats are not equipped with life jackets which are essential in such crossings,” said Murtaza, a resident of Gojal adding that the officials were also rude with the passengers.

The government officials, however, denied incidents of mistreatment.

Anwar, another native of Hunza, said that the trips via Attabad Lake was extremely dangerous as boats could overturn due to strong currents. The experts termed the use of life jackets essential during voyages to ensure minimum loss to life because of the continuous land slides in Attabad.
