US agrees to mediate between Pakistan, India

GILGIT: Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo on Friday said, It is the success of foreign policies of Pakistan People’s Party that the United States for the first time has agreed to mediate between Pakistan and India over Kashmir issue. This, he said while addressing a press conference here.He said that Kashmir dispute should be resolved in accordance with the wishes of the Kashmiri people.
He said that suggestion given by the United Stated on resolving the long standing issue would be helpful for this region.
The federal minister said that affected people of Hunza are at liberty to decide criteria for their permanent rehabilitation and if they want cash compensation they would be paid.He said that if the affected people wanted houses they would be accommodated accordingly. He said that arrangements have been made for shifting the people of 350 houses to safer places living near the village at Hunza due to  the danger  as water level from the lake may rise.The Kashmir Affairs Minister said that border with China   is being opened and in this connection and adequate measures were being adopted by the government.He appreciated the local administration for their quick response to the Hunza landsliding incident.He also lauded the efforts of the government officials in this regard. The minister said that more than 25000 people living in the affected area were cut off from rest of country and added that all out efforts are being made to restore the services.Later, talking to newsmen, he said that engineers of NHA, WAPDA and China are engaged in the reopening of the Karakuram Highway and expressed the hope that the road would be cleared soon. Expressing grief over the loss of precious human lives, the minister said that he had made the visit specially to review the relief activities in the land affected area. He said the government for the provision of quick relief to the affected people of Hunza arranged four helicopters.Earlier, the federal minister visited Hunza and distributed cheques among the affected people.
